by: Claudia Rankine
Genre: Poetry, Racial Justice, Tennis
What Went Down: Claudia tells some truly horrific stories through her poetry. She outlines discrimination, profiling, criminalization. There is a loose theme of tennis that strings many of the poems together – beginning with her chronicles of Serena and the millions of micro and macro aggression that she faced on the court and concluding with a poem she writes about a time when she is on the court.
I gave this book a 4. It’s not the books fault though, it’s mine. I don’t love poetry. I actually think I am going to revisit this at the end of the year and see if I have a better experience reading it a second time around.
Pros: The themes are beautifully woven together throughout the series of poems.
Other notes: Her tone is so detached that it breaks my heart.
